When we published our article in Education for Chemical Engineers, we never imagined the overwhelming response it would receive. With over 21,000 downloads in 2024, it became the most downloaded article of the year! 🎉

Traditionally, university education has focused on individual achievement. But today, there’s a growing shift toward collaborative learning, driven by the increasing demand for teamwork skills in professional environments. Employers now seek graduates who can not only work in teams but also communicate effectively and solve complex problems collectively. 💼🤝
However, this transition comes with challenges:
- Unequal workload distribution
- Potential conflicts among team members
- Fairly assessing individual contributions
Eva Epelde, Maite Artetxe, and I encountered these very same challenges when exploring project-based learning with groups of five students. To address these, in 2018, we introduced the Belbin methodology to create balanced teams, and the results have been transformative.
The success of our article is proof that collaborative learning is not just a trend, but a necessary approach that addresses these challenges and equips students for the professional world.
As the demand for collaborative skills grows, developing effective teamwork strategies will be key in shaping the future of education. 🌍✨
